Polski Owczarek Nizinny (translates to Polish Lowland Sheepdog) and is referred to as the PON in both Poland and the United States. In some European countries they are known as Nizinnies. The American Polish Lowland Sheepdog Club®, a.k.a. APONC™ prefers PON to Nizinny, because it is simpler and is what the breed is known as in its native land.

The American Kennel Club approved the admission of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog into the Herding Group effective August 1, 2001.
