When Annie Met Sally
By Julie Kennedy Cochran
It would be hard to find a more versatile dog than Annie, an 8-year old Polish Lowland Sheepdog, who lives in Estes Park, CO. Since she was 13 months old, Annie has amassed AKC championship titles in conformation, obedience, tracking, agility, and herding. She also has a Canine Good Citizen certificate and is a champion flyballer. Sally Prinzmetal, her owner and handler, credits the PON's exceptional intelligence and amenability to training for Annie's achievements. "These dogs like to be busy and challenged," she says. Currently, Sally is training her new 14-month old PON, Sunny, in various dog sports. Sunny will start entering competitions in early 2006.
Before she got Annie, Sally had never done any handling. She learned it all along with Annie. Training her second PON should be easier, she says. Working with her dogs gives her a great deal of satisfaction. "For me, it's the whole bonding thing that I love," she explains.
Besides taking her dogs to training classes five days a week, Sally practices with them at home. She has a flyball box and a jump in her front hall, an agility tunnel in the dining room, and a teeter and more jumps on her deck. She uses obedience commands in her everyday routine. "The dogs have to down before they get fed," she says. She also organized a "doggie sports group" in her town to practice tracking and other activities with like-minded dog owners. "I've gone to the dogs totally," she laughs. JKC
Thank you, Julie!
